Statistical characteristics of irreversible predictability time in regional ocean models

چکیده
Probabilistic aspects of regional ocean model predictability is analyzed using the probability density function (PDF) of the irreversible predictability time (IPT) (called τ PDF) computed from an unconstrained ensemble of stochastic perturbations in initial conditions, winds, and open boundary conditions. Two-attractors (a chaotic attractor and a small-amplitude stable limit cycle) are found in the winddriven circulation. Relationship between attractor’s residence time and IPT determines the τ -PDF for the short (up to several weeks) and intermediate (up to two months) predictions. The τ -PDF is usually non-Gaussian but not multimodal for red-noise perturbations in initial conditions and perturbations in the wind and open boundary conditions. Bifurcation of τ -PDF occurs as the tolerance level varies. Generally, extremely successful predictions (corresponding to the τ -PDF’s tail toward large IPT domain) are not outliers and share the same statistics as a whole ensemble of predictions.

On Stochastic Stability of Regional Ocean Models to Finite-amplitude Perturbations of Initial Conditions
We consider error propagation near an unstable equilibrium state (classified as an unstable focus) for spatially uncorrelated and correlated finite-amplitude initial perturbations using short(up to several weeks) and intermediate (up to two months) range forecast ensembles produced by a barotropic regional ocean model. An ensemble of initial perturbations is generated by the Latin Hypercube des...
متن کاملDecadal variability and predictability in themidlatitude ocean { atmosphere
The coupled ocean{atmosphere interaction and predictability associated with the tropical El Ni~ no phenomenon has motivated researchers to seek analogous phenomena in the midlatitudes as well. Are there midlatitude coupled ocean{atmosphere modes? Is there signiicant predictability in the midlatitudes? The authors address these questions in the broader context of trying to understand the mechani...

متن کاملOn stochastic stability of regional ocean models with uncertainty in wind forcing
A shallow-water model was used to understand model error induced by non-Gaussian wind uncertainty. Although the model was simple, it described a generic system with many degrees of freedom randomized by external noise. The study focused on the nontrivial collective behavior of finite-amplitude perturbations on different scales and their influence on model predictability. The error growth strong...
